Domaine Henri Gouges – A Nuits-Saint-Georges Benchmark
In the heart of Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Henri Gouges stands as a pillar of traditional Côte de Nuits winemaking. Founded in the 1920s by Henri Gouges, a pioneer of estate bottling in Burgundy, the domaine remains family-run to this day. Now led by Grégory and Antoine Gouges, the estate continues to honor its roots while embracing careful modern refinements.
The domaine covers about 15 hectares, planted exclusively with Pinot Noir, across some of the most iconic Premier Cru sites of Nuits-Saint-Georges — including Les Saint-Georges, Les Vaucrains, Les Pruliers, Les Chênes Carteaux, and the Clos des Porrets-Saint-Georges, which is a family monopole.
Vineyard work is meticulous and sustainable, with low yields, careful soil management, and hand-harvesting to respect each site's identity.
In the cellar, the approach is restrained and traditional: long macerations, gentle extraction, and aging in French oak barrels for about 18 months, with 20–30% new oak depending on the vintage. Wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered, allowing their full character to shine with age.
The wines of Domaine Henri Gouges are known for their structure, depth, and serious aging potential. They may appear firm in youth, but with time they develop fine tannins, elegance, and layered complexity, staying true to the character of Nuits-Saint-Georges.
