Domaine J.L. Chave – The Art of Blending on the Heights of Hermitage
The Domaine Jean-Louis Chave, located in Mauves, at the heart of the northern Rhône Valley, embodies a rare form of winemaking excellence. Present on the hill of Hermitage since the 15th century, the Chave family perpetuates a unique tradition where each vintage is the result of an intimate knowledge of the terroir and a keen sense of balance.
Today, Jean-Louis Chave, representing the current generation, rigorously continues the work started by his ancestors. He relies on an intuitive yet demanding approach, combining observation of nature, viticultural precision, and respect for balance.
The estate cultivates fragmented plots across the entire Hermitage hill, both in red (Syrah) and white (Marsanne and Roussanne). Each locality (Bessards, Méal, L’Hermite, Peleat, Rocoules…) brings its personality: granitic power, clay-limestone roundness, sandy finesse.
The viticulture is organic, without certification. The soils are worked, yields strictly controlled, harvests manual, with strict sorting. In the cellar, Jean-Louis practices parcel-based vinifications, without added yeasts, with gentle extractions and long aging (18 to 24 months), often in barrels of several wines.
The philosophy of the estate is based on the final blending, in the Burgundian style, where each component plays a role to achieve wines that are deep, subtle, and timeless. The house style combines density, freshness, texture, and nobility.
Besides Hermitage, the estate also vinifies very fine cuvées in Saint-Joseph on its historic vineyards around Mauves, always in this spirit of balance and precision.
Iconic Cuvées:
Hermitage Rouge: breadth, complexity, deep minerality.
Hermitage Blanc: richness, tension, great aging potential.
Saint-Joseph Rouge: floral, juicy, finely structured.
Cuvée Cathelin (Hermitage Rouge): absolute rarity, extreme purity, and longevity.
