Located between Lyon and Marseille, the Rhone Valley produces a beautiful range of wines. As for the North, winemaking is generally of very good quality in the appellations Côte Rotie, Hermitage, Cornas and Condrieu but it is less consistent in others.
Northern Côtes-du-Rhone:
1) Côte Rotie:
- Red wines only.
- Best producers: Guigal la Mouline, Guigal la Turque, Guigal la Landonne, Chapoutier for its cuvée Mordorée, Jean-Paul et Jean-Luc Jamet and Rostaing.
- Best vintages: 2010, 2009, 2003, 1999, 1991, 1985, 1983, 1978, 1976.
2) Condrieu:
- White wines only (with viognier grape);
- aging potential: 5 years;
- Best producer: Guigal
3) Hermitage:
- White and red wines;
- Best producers: Chapoutier (single-vineyard cuvées), J.L. Chave, Paul Jaboulet, Henri Sorrel;
- Best vintages: 2010, 2009, 2003, 1999, 1990, 1989, 1985, 1983, 1979, 1978, 1972, 1970, 1966, 1961, 1959.
4) Cornas:
- Red wines only (100% syrah);
- Best vintages: 2010, 2009, 2003, 1999, 1990, 1988, 1985, 1983, 1979, 1978, 1976, 1969.
Southern Côtes-du-Rhone:
- White and red wine;
- Best producers: Beaucastel, Henri Bonneau (cuvée des Célestins), Domaine de Pégau, Rayas, domaine de Marcoux, Clos des Papes.
- Best vintages: 2010, 2007, 2001, 2000, 1998, 1990, 1989, 1983, 1978, 1970, 1967, 1961, 1957.
