The Biondi Santi family is the creator of Brunello di Montalcino, one of the most famous wines in the world. Even today, the estate adheres to traditional and very strict rules. The grape variety is brunello, a variety of sangiovese, the grape of Chianti. The clusters of this grape are small berries with thick skins that had the particularity of better resisting phylloxera attacks.
The wines of the estate:
Brunello di Montalcino Riserva: from vines over 25 years old, then aged for 4 years in Slavonian oak barrels and then at least six more months in the bottle. The share of production is about 20%, which represents about 6000 bottles;
Brunello di Montalcino Anneta: vines aged between 11 and 25 years;
Rosso di Montalcino: from young vines;
The myth of this estate is the Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. It must be waited for at least 25 years to drink and is only produced during the best years.
The aging potential of this wine is simply enormous and can surpass the lifespan of a man.
The greatest vintages of the riserva: 1888 (1st official great vintage), 1891 (still in too good shape…), 1925, 1945, 1955 (according to Wine Spectator, one of the 12 greatest wines of the 20th century), 1964, 1975, 1983
