With Château Margaux, the mythical first grand cru classé, the appellation brings together 21 classified growths from 1855.
The appellation produces some 78,000 hl of wines, exclusively red, with the exception of Pavillon Blanc from Château Margaux and the very confidential white cuvée from Château Palmer.

The perfect pairing with a wine from the Margaux appellation is Tournedos Rossini.
The main grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon followed by Merlot and Petit Verdot.
The greatest vintages of the appellation are 2010, 2009, 2005, 2000, 1996, 1995, 1990, 1986, 1983, 1979, 1961.
