Vintages

Classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé de Pauillac since 1973, Château Mouton Rothschild embodies one of the greatest names in the Bordeaux vineyard. Long perceived as inconsistent, the estate has established itself since the 1990s as one of the most consistently top châteaux, capable of producing wines that combine richness, density, and mythical opulence.

Today, Mouton Rothschild attracts collectors and enthusiasts worldwide with its flamboyant style, aromatic depth, and exceptional aging potential.

An exceptional terroir in Pauillac

  • Vineyard area: 84 hectares

  • Grape varieties: 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc

  • Planting density: 8,500 vines per hectare

  • Average age of the vines: 45 years

  • Average production: about 300,000 bottles per year

  • Aging potential: 10 to 50 years depending on the vintage

The vineyard is planted on superb deep gravel typical of Pauillac, ensuring optimal drainage and even ripening of the grapes. The Cabernet Sauvignon, the king grape of the Médoc, reaches a majestic expression here, perfectly balanced by a small proportion of Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

A distinctive style: richness, density, opulence

Mouton Rothschild is known for its powerful and seductive style, where very ripe black fruits, spices, licorice, blond tobacco, and truffle mingle. The great vintages are marked by a velvety tannic structure, a full-bodied palate, and a long and refined finish.

Each bottle is also a work of art: since 1945, the label of each vintage has been illustrated by a major contemporary artist (Picasso, Dali, Warhol, Koons…).

Second wine: Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild

Le Petit Mouton is the estate's second wine, made from young vines and parcel selections. It benefits from the same care in the vineyard and winery, in a more accessible style, but always marked by the Mouton signature: power, intensity, and roundness.

Exceptional vintages to prioritize

Some vintages of Château Mouton Rothschild have made history among the great wines of Bordeaux for their aromatic perfection and longevity. Among the most mythical:

  • Old vintages: 1945, 1955, 1959, 1982, 1986

  • Modern vintages: 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2016
