The Moselle vineyard is one of the 13 German wine regions (Weinbaugebiete) with a controlled designation of origin (Qualitätswein, formerly QbA, and Prädikatswein).

The wine region is the fifth largest in Germany in terms of area (8.5%) and production (7.2%), but some consider it the first in terms of international prestige.

The Moselle is mainly known for its wines made from the riesling grape variety (23.2% of the German vineyard in 2017), but müller-thurgau (12.1%) and pinot noir (11.4%) are also among the grape varieties grown in the region.

Due to the northern position of the Moselle, wines made from riesling are often light, with a reduced alcohol content, fresh and rich in acidity, and often exhibit floral aromas in addition to fruit aromas.
