At the extreme south of Burgundy, the Beaujolais vineyard, where the Gamay grape variety reigns supreme, produces colorful and fruity red wines.

The Beaujolais vineyard stretches from the south of Mâcon to the north of Lyon, covering 15,700 ha.

Some appellations of Beaujolais:

Chénas
The smallest appellation of Beaujolais (249 hectares) has 200 winemakers and extends over two communes, Chénas, in the Rhône, and La Chapelle-de-Guinchay, in Saône-et-Loire.

Juliénas
Located on granitic, lean, and arid soils, the Juliénas appellation (537 hectares) extends over four communes in the Rhône and Saône-et-Loire departments, and produces wines that are more tense and fresh.

Morgon
Although vast (1,100 hectares), the appellation extends only over the commune of Villié-Morgon, on friable rocks of pyrite schist. The AOC includes six climates which are from east to west: Grand Cras, Les Charmes, Côte de Py (the most renowned of all), Corcelette, Les Micouds, and Douby.

Moulin-à-Vent
This appellation takes its name from the 15th-century mill that dominates the appellation. It extends over two villages, Romanèche-Thorins and Chénas, and covers 627 ha. Its complex and powerful wines age majestically.

Saint-Amour
This small appellation (302 hectares), with a name full of promises, has only 46 winemakers. It is located at the extreme north of the vineyard, on the eponymous commune, and produces delicate and fruity wines. It also includes twelve climates, some of which perfectly match the name of the AOC: À La Folie or En Paradis.
