Graves is the only appellation in France to derive its name from the nature of the soils that compose it. The latter is composed of two-thirds red wines, elegant and sensual wines, and one-third dry and sweet white wines (marketed under the appellation graves supérieur).
Creation of the AOC: 1987, 16 classified growths of Graves, including a Premier Grand Cru classified in 1855, Château Haut Brion;
Area: 1640 ha
Main grape varieties (for red): cabernet sauvignon and merlot mainly;
Main grape varieties (for white): sauvignon blanc and sémillon, but also small quantities of muscadelle;
