Armagnac: A Liquid Treasure in the Heart of Gascony

Armagnac is a prestigious brandy, produced mainly in the Gascony region, in the southwest of France. Older than cognac, this traditional drink benefits from unique expertise and a richness of flavors that makes it irresistible to lovers of refined spirits. Distilled from grapes harvested in the best terroirs, armagnac captivates with its complex aromas and authentic character.

The Characteristics of Armagnac

Armagnac is distinguished by its unique distillation process, carried out in a column still, which gives it a richer and more intense profile than cognac. Aged in oak barrels, it develops aromas of dried fruits, spices, honey, and woody notes that evolve over time.

The grape varieties used for armagnac mainly include Folle Blanche, Ugni Blanc, Baco, and Colombard, each contributing its own part to the balance of flavors. Armagnac is generally classified by its age:

  • VS (Very Special): Aged for a minimum of 2 years.
  • VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale): Aged between 4 and 10 years.
  • XO (Extra Old): Aged 10 years or more.

Types of Armagnac:

  • Armagnac Hors d'Âge: An exceptional armagnac that has been aged for several decades, offering unmatched complexity and aromas.
  • Armagnac Vieilli: It can be aged 10, 20, or even 30 years, allowing it to develop a richness of flavors of candied fruits, vanilla, and oak.
  • Armagnac Millésimé: An armagnac from a single harvest year, allowing you to discover the unique imprint of a particular vintage.

How to Taste Armagnac

Armagnac is generally enjoyed neat, at room temperature, in a tulip glass or a cognac glass to fully appreciate its aromas. It can also be used in sophisticated cocktails or paired with foods such as aged cheeses, dark chocolates, or dried fruits.
