Founded in 1913 by Manuel de Almeida in Vila Nova de Gaia, Barros has established itself as a must-visit Port house, blending respect for its origins with consistent excellence. Now owned by the Sogevinus Fine Wines group, it remains true to the spirit of its founders.
History and Heritage
Barros first experienced significant expansion under the leadership of Manuel de Almeida and his successors, before being integrated into Sogevinus in the early 2000s. The Barros style is based on a rigorous selection of grapes from the quintas of the Upper Douro, controlled winemaking, and long aging in old vats.
Winemaking Methods
The grapes mainly come from indigenous varieties: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and Tinto Cão. Fermentations are stopped by fortification with wine brandy, and then the Ports are aged in the historic cellars of Gaia, in large vats for the Tawnies, or in tanks for the Rubies.
