A Legend of Saint-Julien, Between Nobility and Uniqueness

Classified as a Second Grand Cru in 1855, Château Gruaud Larose is an emblematic figure of the Médoc, whose motto on the label – “The wine of kings, the king of wines” – summarizes all its ambition and elegance. Nestled in the heart of the Saint-Julien appellation, this historic estate stands out for its style that is both opulent, structured, and intensely aromatic.

Founded in the early 18th century by Abbé Gruaud, the estate has had several illustrious owners, including the Cordier family, before being acquired in 1997 by the Taillan group (Merlaut family), also owners of Chasse-Spleen and Haut-Bages Libéral.

An Exceptional Terroir, in One Piece

The vineyard of 82 hectares is located on one of the highest gravel plateaus of the Médoc. In one piece around the château, it benefits from a perfect natural drainage, promoting homogeneous ripeness and deep rooting. The planting is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, the noble grape variety of the Médoc, complemented by Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc.

A Style Both Powerful, Classic, and Distinctive

Gruaud Larose embodies an opulent Saint-Julien, with intense aromas of black fruits, cedar, spices, and undergrowth. The wines are structured, with an imposing but racy tannic framework, and a great aging potential. The vinifications are carried out with precision, in thermoregulated stainless steel vats, then aged in French oak barrels (60 to 80% new depending on the vintages), for a period of 18 to 24 months.

Iconic Cuvées

  • Château Gruaud Larose: The grand wine, from the oldest vines and the best plots. A noble and complex wine for aging.

  • Sarget de Gruaud Larose: The second wine, more accessible, with a generous and charming style, perfect for discovering the property's signature.

A Philosophy of Respect and Transmission

The estate's approach is based on sustainable viticulture, certified HVE3, with a return to manual practices, high planting density, and a rigorous plot-based approach. The objective: to sincerely reveal the dialogue between soil, grape variety, and climate, in every bottle.
