Founded in 1987 in Chippis (upper bank of Sierre) by Nicolas Zufferey, Cave des Bernunes remains a family-run business of human scale. In 1994, a modern cellar was established at Bernunes, expanded in 2013 to include a barrel cellar, wine workshop, and reception area. The team (5 to 6 collaborators) takes care of the estate, around a common vision: to pass on a living heritage.
Philosophy & viticulture
The winery works with respect for biodiversity, promoting responsible vineyard management: working with horses, grassing, yield control, and environmentally friendly practices. Fermentations are controlled, aging is adapted to each grape variety, with particular attention to terroir cuvées – notably the "Clos des Bernunes".
Terroirs & grape varieties
Located on the limestone slopes of the Sierre valley, the estate highlights both indigenous white grape varieties (Chasselas / Fendant, Petite Arvine, Savagnin blanc, Sylvaner, Marsanne, Humagne blanc, Muscat, Riesling) and remarkable reds (Pinot Noir, Gamay, Cornalin, Humagne Rouge, Merlot, Divico, Syrah). Terroir wines are in barrels, others are aged in vats or foudres according to the desired profile.
Iconic cuvées
Fendant Les Bernunes (Chasselas): fresh and mineral terroir wine, reflecting the place.
Clos des Bernunes Pinot Noir: elegant and fruity expression, in barrel.
Syrah du Domaine 2020: powerful, notes of red fruits, wood, well-integrated tannins.
Cornalin: fruity, juicy, silky tannins, and positive finish.
Other notable wines: Petite Arvine, Humagne Rouge, Gamay, Divico, Savagnin, Marsanne.
Wine style
The wines of Cave des Bernunes are characterized by their purity, freshness, minerality, and typicity, while expressing the diversity of Valais. Aging is controlled to respect the grape varieties and highlight the expression of the terroir. The barrel-aged cuvées (Clos, Syrah, Cornalin) reveal structure and elegance.
