Domaine de Marcoux – Biodynamic Elegance in Châteauneuf-du-Pape
A Historic Estate Led by Two Visionary Sisters
The Domaine de Marcoux, whose origins date back to the 14th century, was modernized by the sisters Catherine and Sophie Armenier, pioneers of biodynamics in Châteauneuf-du-Pape since the 1990s. Sophie, a trained oenologist, was a major figure in this transition, bringing a feminine, precise, and vibrant signature to their wines.
Diverse Terroirs & Heritage Old Vines
The vineyard spans 18 ha in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and 8 ha in Lirac, on prestigious terroirs like Charbonnières, Gallimardes, or Esquirons. The old Grenache vines (up to 100 years) are alongside Mourvèdre, Syrah, and Cinsault. The soils, very varied (rolled pebbles, sand, red clays), allow for complex blends.
Biodynamics and Gentle Vinification
Certified biodynamic since 1991, the estate limits inputs, practices manual harvesting, gentle macerations, and aging in foudres or concrete vats to preserve the purity of the fruit. Sulfur is used sparingly.
Style: Refined Grenache, Tension, and Depth
The wines combine restrained power, velvety texture, remarkable balance, and a great readability of the terroir. The fruit is pure, the tannins fine, and the finish often saline and spicy. The cuvées gain complexity over time.
Iconic Cuvées
Châteauneuf-du-Pape: noble, silky, elegant blend, dominated by Grenache (~80%).
Vieilles Vignes: rare and sought-after cuvée, from the oldest plots on sand, pure Grenache delicately aged – great depth, assured aging.
Lirac: more accessible version but faithful to the house style, crunchy, floral, with beautiful freshness.
Vin de France Rosé: in very small quantities, gastronomic rosé, subtle fruit, and aromatic finesse.
