A pioneering estate at the heart of Montalcino

Located a few kilometers northeast of the village of Montalcino, the Altesino estate is one of the historic names in the region. Founded in the 1970s, it has helped to promote Brunello di Montalcino internationally thanks to a visionary approach.

Indeed, it was Altesino that introduced the notion of “cru” in the appellation in 1975, with the Montosoli cuvée, from a unique and exceptional parcel. Today, under the direction of the Angelini group, the estate continues this tradition of excellence, with oenologist Claudio Basla at the helm.

An altitude terroir, a guarantee of elegance

The vineyard extends over about fifty hectares spread over the hills of Montalcino, between 250 and 400 meters above sea level. The soils are mainly marl-limestone, rich in pebbles, with good drainage capacity. The exposure and natural ventilation ensure a slow and complete maturation of the Sangiovese, allowing the production of wines that are both powerful and fine, with a natural acidity that gives them a remarkable aging potential.

A philosophy of balance

At Altesino, everything is based on the search for balance between tradition and innovation. The work in the vineyard is meticulous, without excess or artifice, with rigorous parcel monitoring. The harvest is manual, and each batch is vinified separately to preserve the identity of each terroir.

Precise vinification, respecting the grape variety

The Sangiovese Grosso, the only grape variety allowed for Brunello, is vinified with delicacy:

  • Fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks

  • Long maceration to extract the structure without harshness

  • Mixed aging: traditional large barrels and French barriques, depending on the cuvées

  • Bottle aging of 6 to 12 months before release

This method allows for expressive, structured wines, without heavy woodiness, true to their origin.

Iconic cuvées

  • Brunello di Montalcino DOCG: classic, elegant, and typical cuvée, with beautiful complexity of red fruits, sweet spices, and blond tobacco.

  • Montosoli: the first “cru” of Montalcino, from a mythical terroir northeast of the commune. Purity of fruit, tannic refinement, saline intensity.

  • Rosso di Montalcino DOC: more accessible in its youth, combining freshness and suppleness, a perfect introduction to the house style.

  • Brunello Riserva: produced only in the best vintages, parcel selection and extended aging. Majestic.
