Founded in 1932 in Haro, at the heart of Rioja Alta, Bodegas Muga is one of the historical pillars of Spanish winemaking. Still in the hands of the founding family, now represented by Manuel, Isaac, and Jorge Muga, the estate embodies an artisanal and rigorous vision of wine, faithful to the roots of Rioja, but with a level of demand rarely equaled.
The philosophy is based on an integrated management of the entire production chain: Muga is one of the few bodegas to have its own cooperage, using exclusively French, American, and sometimes Hungarian oak, custom toasted, which allows for a perfect mastery of aging. Fermentations are conducted only with indigenous yeasts, often in vats or wooden tanks.
Terroir & vinification
The vineyards are located at altitude, in the best areas of Rioja Alta, around Haro and the village of Sajazarra. The clay-limestone soils, cool nights, and moderate Atlantic climate allow for fine, balanced Tempranillos with great aging potential. The traditional grape varieties – Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, Mazuelo for reds; Viura and Malvasia for whites – are vinified plot by plot, with exemplary precision.
The aging, in carefully chosen oak barrels and vats, is long but elegantly integrated, never overpowering the fruit. Each wine is the reflection of a patient and meticulous approach, where nothing is left to chance.
