Founded in 1859 in Barbaresco, the Gaja estate has embodied the renaissance of Italian wine for five generations. Under the visionary leadership of Angelo Gaja, and later his children Gaia and Giovanni, the estate has become synonymous with elegance, innovation, and respect for the terroir. A pioneering house, each bottle is the most accomplished expression of Piedmont – and far beyond.
A history of breaking with tradition and demanding excellence
When Angelo Gaja took over the family estate in the 1960s, he shook up traditions: limiting yields, green harvesting, parcel-based vinification, and introducing new barrels. This desire to elevate Italian wines to the level of the world's greatest crus revolutionized the region. Since then, the Gaja style has set a standard, and its wines are sought after worldwide.
Exceptional terroirs in Piedmont and Tuscany
The heart of the estate beats in Barbaresco, with legendary parcels like Costa Russi, Sorì Tildin, Sorì San Lorenzo. Gaja also owns vineyards in Barolo (Sperss, Conteisa), as well as in Tuscany (Pieve Santa Restituta in Montalcino, Ca’ Marcanda in Bolgheri). Each location is carefully chosen for its potential for maximum expression of the grape variety, notably Nebbiolo, but also Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, or Chardonnay.
Mastered vinification, surgical precision
Fermentations are conducted in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with a very fine extraction work, followed by long aging in barrels (often French oak) and then in large casks, depending on the cuvées. The quest is always the same: preserve the integrity of the fruit, convey the depth of the terroir, without ever overplaying the power.
An identifiable style, between authority and finesse
Gaja wines combine a chiseled structure, a controlled freshness, a beautiful tannic density, and an elegant length. When young, they impress with their purity and precision; over time, they reveal a bewitching aromatic complexity, between black fruits, violet, tar, sweet spices, and truffle.
Iconic cuvées
Barbaresco: signature wine, from several crus, superb balance between finesse and tension.
Costa Russi / Sorì Tildin / Sorì San Lorenzo: the trilogy of legendary crus. Depth, purity, and prodigious longevity.
Sperss (Barolo): majestic, deep, dark, and mineral.
Gaia & Rey: high-flying Chardonnay, complex, tense, saline.
Ca’ Marcanda / Magari / Promis (Tuscany): Bordeaux elegance on the lands of Bolgheri.
A philosophy between tradition, modernity, and emotion
At Gaja, nothing is left to chance. Every detail is considered, every vintage experienced as an artistic challenge. It is not just an estate, it is a living family institution, combining scientific rigor, winemaking intuition, and love of beauty.
