Château Clarke is a historic estate in Listrac-Médoc, founded in the 18th century and purchased in 1973 by Baron Edmond de Rothschild. He then undertook a complete replanting of the vineyard and a comprehensive modernization of the facilities. Today, Ariane and Benjamin de Rothschild continue this family adventure with renewed ambition, realized through a complete renovation of the cellar recently completed.

A unique terroir with a clay-limestone dominance
The 54-hectare vineyard is situated on clay-limestone slopes, more typical of the right bank than the left bank, giving the wines an original and refined character. The grape variety is distinguished by a majority of Merlot (about 70%), complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon (30%). The planting density is high, the vines are on average 30 years old, and the vineyard management respects natural balances.

Sustainable viticulture & precision winemaking
Viticulture is conducted without chemical herbicides, with controlled grass cover and practices that promote biodiversity. Harvesting is manual, and the grapes are carefully sorted. Winemaking is done by gravity in stainless steel and wooden vats, with gentle extractions and long macerations under temperature control.

Aging & wine style
The red wine is aged for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, about two-thirds of which are new, after malolactic fermentation carried out in barrels. The estate also produces a rare white wine in the Médoc, Le Merle Blanc, made from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Sauvignon Gris, and Muscadelle, aged in barrels for about six months.

Iconic cuvées

  • Château Clarke (red): rich, structured, with aromas of ripe black fruits, cedar, licorice, and sweet spices. Powerful yet balanced on the palate, fine tannins, saline and persistent finish.

  • Le Merle Blanc de Château Clarke: Médoc rarity, with a floral and lemony nose, pronounced minerality, lively freshness, and elegance on the palate.

  • Les Granges des Domaines Edmond de Rothschild: the estate's second wine, more accessible, fruity, and indulgent.
