A discreet giant led with distinction by the Pellen family
Château Gazin has belonged to the Pellen family since 1918. Today, Édouard Pellen-Courteaux, fourth generation, runs the estate with his sister Anne Pellen-Courteaux, oenologist and technical manager. They rely on Jérôme Mallet, director of viticulture, to preserve the balance and elegance of a powerful Pomerol.
Terroir & grape varieties: deep gravel and concentration of Merlot
The 27 ha vineyard is planted on typical gravel of the Pomerol plateau, in a subsoil rich in silty blue clay. The grape composition is dominated by Merlot (~90%), with a complement of Cabernet Franc (~10%), offering density, aromatic richness, and typical freshness.
Viticulture & philosophy: sobriety, parcel-based, balance
Sustainable viticulture, soils worked without herbicides, manual harvesting with sorting in crates. The family combines ancestral know-how and technical rigor to preserve the expression of each parcel.
Vinification & aging: structure and depth
Completely destemmed harvest, fermentation in stainless steel tanks with macerations of 4 to 5 weeks. Aging of 18 to 20 months in French barrels (50–70% new), carefully selected to support the structure without masking the delicacy of the fruit.
Iconic cuvées
– Château Gazin (Grand Vin): aromas of blackberry, truffle, graphite, and fine spices. Powerful yet melted tannins, perfect balance between extraction and freshness, great aging potential.
– Bras de Gazin (second wine): more accessible fruit, supple structure, pleasant young or after a few years of aging.
