Classic balance, aromatic finesse, and Médoc elegance
Classified as a Second Growth in 1855, Château Rauzan-Gassies is one of the historical jewels of Margaux. Located a stone's throw from the village and its greatest wines, it spans 30 hectares of typical Günzian gravel from the left bank. The estate is currently managed by Sébastien Ménard, a precision oenologist, within the Rouzaud family group (Champagne Louis Roederer).
Terroir & grape varieties
The vines benefit from a terroir of deep gravel on a clay-limestone subsoil, conducive to the slow and complete ripening of Cabernet. The current grape composition consists of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc, with a high planting density to promote concentration.
Viticulture & practices
The harvest is done by hand, with rigorous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery. Parcel management is at the heart of the estate's practices, incorporating sustainable farming methods, mechanical soil work, and targeted interventions according to the needs of each micro-terroir.
Vinification & aging
Fermentations are conducted in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats with gentle extractions. The aging of the grand vin lasts 14 to 16 months in French oak barrels, about 50% new, to bring structure, depth, and elegance without overpowering the fruit.
Style & emblematic cuvée
Château Rauzan-Gassies: bright purple color, fine nose of black cherry, currant, violet, sweet pepper, and cedar. Harmonious palate, polished tannins, fresh and mouthwatering length, with a slightly graphite finish. A great wine for aging, it can age 15 to 25 years depending on the vintage.
