Asserted power, Bordeaux elegance, and fidelity to the terroir

Emblematic estate of Haut-Médoc, Château Sociando-Mallet covers about 83 ha of vines in production over a total of nearly 110 ha, located in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne. Managed by Jean Gautreau until 2019 and then taken over by his daughter Sylvie Gautreau and his grandson Arthur, the estate is recognized for its consistency and ability to compete with the greatest classified growths.

Terroir & grape varieties

Günzian gravel soils on a clay-limestone subsoil, with a privileged exposure to the river. The grape varieties consist of ≈55% Merlot, ≈40% Cabernet Sauvignon, ≈5% Cabernet Franc, with a density of about 8,333 vines/ha and vines approximately 35 years old.

Viticulture & winemaking

Vines are managed with sustainable agriculture, without destemming or green harvest. Fermentations are conducted in stainless steel or concrete thermo-regulated vats, followed by aging in 100% new barrels (≈95% of the wine) for 12–18 months, depending on the lots.

Production

  • Château Sociando-Mallet (grand vin): about 35,000 cases/year

  • La Demoiselle de Sociando-Mallet (second wine): about 10,000–12,000 cases/year

Style & aging potential

The wine is structured, dense, with aromas of blackcurrant, graphite, spices, and menthol notes. The finish is fresh and slightly mineral. It is renowned for its long aging potential: 10 to 25 years, depending on the vintages.
