Domaine de l’Église – Merlot of Nobility on the Pomerol Plateau

One of the oldest estates in Pomerol

The Domaine de l’Église takes its name from its proximity to the Saint-Jean de Pomerol church. It has been mentioned since the 18th century and is among the oldest estates in the appellation. Acquired by the Castéja family (Borie-Manoux group) in the 1970s, it now benefits from the technical expertise of the Château Batailley team.

An exceptional terroir on the plateau

The vineyard covers about 7 hectares, located in the heart of the Pomerol plateau, in direct proximity to Pétrus. The soils consist of deep fine clays, ideal for Merlot, which dominates at more than 95%, complemented by a hint of Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vines exceeds 40 years.

Respectful viticulture & precise vinifications

The estate follows sustainable viticulture, with traditional plowing and manual harvesting. The vinifications are precise and temperature-controlled, followed by aging in barrels (30 to 40% new) for 18 months, to reveal all the finesse of the fruit without masking the terroir.

Style: elegance, depth, classicism

Domaine de l’Église is recognized for its pure, classic, and straight profile, with aromas of black cherry, truffle, violet, and a silky mouthfeel with a persistent finish. The careful aging brings structure without excess. A wine with medium maturity (10–15 years), to be appreciated for its elegance rather than power.
