A unique vintage, between absolute refinement and discreet depth
South of Bordeaux, in the prestigious appellation Pessac-Léognan, Château Haut-Bailly has embodied for over a century the rare union of elegance, balance, and purity of expression. Classified as a Cru Classé de Graves in 1953, the estate is today one of the most respected on the left bank.
Since 1998, it has been skillfully and visionary led by Véronique Sanders, heir to a family historically linked to the estate, and supported by the talented technical director Gabriel Vialard. Together, they continue the work begun by Robert G. Wilmers, a New York banker passionate about wines, whose family remains the owner of the estate today.
A remarkable vineyard, rooted in history
The estate spans 30 hectares in a single block, resting on one of the most beautiful ridges of deep gravel in Léognan. This terroir benefits from an ideal southeast exposure and a great diversity of soils, mixing sands, gravels, clays, and limestone subsoils. Some plots, like those called "Parcelle Centenaire", have vines planted in 1890, a unique genetic heritage in Bordeaux.
Winemaking methods: precision and respect for the fruit
The harvest is entirely manual, conducted plot by plot, even intra-plot. Optical sorting is followed by gravity vinification in the ultramodern winery inaugurated in 2021, designed by architect Daniel Romeo. Fermentations are gentle, conducted in wooden or stainless steel thermo-regulated truncated tanks. Aging takes place for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, of which 50 to 60% are new, with meticulous monitoring.
A racy, harmonious style, true to its terroir
The wines of Haut-Bailly are the archetype of Bordeaux refinement: a straight structure, a velvety texture, a measured intensity. Notes of black fruits, graphite, faded rose, sweet spices. The wine gains complexity with the years, while remaining accessible through its smooth grain and serene depth.
The emblematic cuvées
Château Haut-Bailly: The grand wine. Finesse, energy, and longevity. A Bordeaux for contemplation, capable of spanning decades.
Haut-Bailly II: The second wine, from young vines and some historical plots. Accessible in its youth, yet always with great balance.
A philosophy centered on nature, time, and the right gesture
Château Haut-Bailly cultivates a minimalist and demanding approach, where every gesture has meaning. Respect for biodiversity, absence of superfluous inputs, preservation of balances. Here, man accompanies, he does not lead. The new winery, semi-buried and perfectly integrated into the landscape, embodies this desire for transparency, serenity, and sustainability.
Why choose Château Haut-Bailly?
Because it is the expression of a confidential, refined Bordeaux, masterfully vinified, which speaks to the intellect as much as to the heart. A connoisseur's choice.
