Founder of the mythical Tinto Pesquera, Alejandro Fernández (1932–2021) is considered the spiritual father of modern Ribera del Duero. Since the 1970s, he bet on the potential of Tempranillo in this still unknown region, and elevated his estate to the level of the greatest Spanish wines, inspired by Bordeaux wines.

History and Vision

In 1972, Alejandro founded Pesquera, in the village of the same name. At a time when only Vega Sicilia was known, he dared to produce powerful red wines, aged for a long time, exclusively in Tempranillo, from vines cultivated at altitude on limestone and gravelly soils. His vision was based on authenticity, fruit maturity, and the natural elegance of the grape variety.

Vineyard and Terroir

Tinto Pesquera now cultivates about 200 hectares, between 750 and 850 meters above sea level, around Pesquera de Duero. The Tempranillo (or Tinto Fino) vines take root in clay-limestone and alluvial soils, with a marked continental climate, ideal for producing wines of structure, concentration, and aging potential.

Vinification and Aging

Fermentations are carried out in stainless steel or concrete tanks, then the wines are aged between 18 and 24 months in American oak barrels, with a focus on blending and integration. No fining or filtration, to preserve the authenticity of the fruit and the density of the wine.

Iconic Cuvées

  • Tinto Pesquera Crianza: the quintessence of the house style, black fruits, vanilla, tender structure.

  • Reserva: deeper, noble wood, tight tannins, assured longevity.

  • Gran Reserva Janus: only the best years, monumental richness and complexity.

  • Millennium: rare cuvée, silky and racy, with great potential.

  • Alejairén: aging white based on Airén, vinified like a great gastronomic white.

Style and Recognition

Tinto Pesquera has long been nicknamed the "Spanish Pétrus", as it has left a lasting impression. Even today, the wines offer a deep, ripe, and sincere expression of Tempranillo, in a style that is both traditional, structured, and accessible, which has become emblematic of Ribera del Duero.
