Iodine power, spicy charm, and gravelly nobility

Château Phélan Ségur is an exceptional Cru Bourgeois located on the left bank, within the Saint-Estèphe appellation. The estate covers approximately 47 hectares of deep gravel on a clay base, still owned by the Chainier family for several generations. Today, it is managed by Barbara Sour with the technical support of Franck Mazo, embodying a powerful, iodine-rich, and racy style, true to its maritime terroir.

Terroir & blend

The vineyard rests on Günzian gravel with a clay subsoil, benefiting from efficient drainage and a supply of marine elements. The grape variety consists mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon (≈55%), Merlot (≈35%), with Petit Verdot (≈8%) and Cabernet Franc. The planting density, between 7,500 and 8,500 vines/ha, promotes concentration and finesse.

Viticulture & sustainable commitment

The approach is reasoned and parcel-based, with grass cover between the rows, manual harvesting, and rigorous selection in the vineyard and the cellar. Careful management of biodiversity is conducted, favoring hedges, flower strips, and natural cover to preserve the ecosystem.

Vinification & structured aging

Separate vinification by plot, in thermoregulated stainless steel vats, long macerations (3 to 4 weeks) with progressive pump-overs. Aging extends over 16 to 18 months in French barrels, with a contribution of 50% new wood, or even more on the best lots, to structure and refine the tannic framework.

Style & emblematic cuvées

Château Phélan Ségur (grand vin): dark robe, powerful nose of ripe blackcurrant, spices, cedar, and iodine nuances. The attack is ample, the structure fine, the tannins round and mouthwatering, with a long, fresh, and mineral finish. Aging potential of 15 to 25 years.
La Croix de Phélan Ségur: second wine accessible earlier, fruity and elegant, capturing the identity of the terroir with suppleness.
