Baroque charm, generous wines, and gravelly precision

Château Maucaillou, a superb estate of 72 ha in the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation, owes its character to its history and exceptional terroir. Created in 1875 by the Petit-Laroche family on Günz gravel, it has belonged to the Dourthe family since 1929. Today, it is managed by Pascal Dourthe, assisted by Magali Dourthe as technical director and André Martin as cellar master, producing powerful, elegant, and refined wines, recognized among the best crus bourgeois.

A historicized terroir of gravelly-clay soil

The vineyard rests on quaternary gravel mounds, originating from the Günz, on a clay-limestone subsoil. Vines planted on about 100 ha (including 72 ha in Moulis, 18 ha in Haut-Médoc). Classic Bordeaux grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon (~52%), Merlot (~41%), Petit Verdot (~7%), occasionally supplemented by Cabernet Franc. Deeply draining soils, promoting optimal maturity and finesse.

Technical and viticultural work

Mixed harvesting (hand and machine), technological vinification in thermoregulated stainless steel vats, according to a specific process developed since 1982. Malolactic fermentation in vats. Aging for 16–18 months in French barrels, with 50–75% new wood each year, for structure and silky tannins.

Architecture & spirit

The château, built in 1875 in an eclectic Renaissance/Baroque style, overlooks the gravel and houses a museum of wine arts, inviting exchange and culture. The property is a member of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux, revealing its rank among the remarkable crus.
