Fonterutoli — Tuscan Excellence Since 1435
Near Castellina in Chianti, Castello di Fonterutoli is a historic estate owned by the Mazzei family since 1435. With 24 generations of winemaking heritage, the estate exemplifies the fusion of tradition, terroir precision, and innovation.
Philosophy & Leadership
Today, Francesco and Filippo Mazzei lead the winery with the support of the younger generation. The family is committed to expressing the authenticity of their terroirs while investing in sustainability, innovation, and architectural design.
Vineyards & Terroir
The estate includes 650 hectares, of which 110 hectares are vineyards, divided into 114 parcels and 7 micro-zones, located between 220 and 570 meters above sea level. The limestone-rich soils contribute to a signature mineral character — often described as "wine of the stones."
Winery & Vinification
-
The gravity-flow cellar, built over three underground levels, ensures gentle handling of grapes.
-
All parcels are vinified separately in conical stainless-steel tanks to preserve individual expression.
-
Over 3,000 oak barrels are used for aging, in naturally regulated conditions.
Signature Wines
-
Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Fonterutoli: elegant and structured, from top parcels.
-
Vicoregio 36: made from 36 unique Sangiovese biotypes — a symbol of innovation.
-
Siepi: iconic Super Tuscan blending Sangiovese and Merlot.
-
Concerto: historic blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, launched in 1981.
Wine Style
Fonterutoli wines are elegant, vibrant, and mineral, with silky tannins and floral aromatics. They reflect both precision and longevity, marrying power and finesse.
