With its iconic heart on the label and its style blending power, depth, and emotion, Château Calon Ségur embodies one of the most endearing and noble expressions of the Médoc. Third Grand Cru Classé of 1855, it is also one of the oldest and most respected estates of Saint-Estèphe.
A love story for the terroir
The name "Calon" once referred to a small boat used to transport wood on the Gironde. The estate took off in the 18th century with the Marquis de Ségur, also owner of Lafite and Latour, who declared:
“I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon.”
A phrase that became legend and forever engraved on every bottle.
A unique terroir at the heart of the appellation
The vineyard of 55 hectares rests on a mound of deep gravel, mixed with clay, typical of Saint-Estèphe. This terroir produces wines with a solid structure, a refreshing acidity, and a remarkable longevity. The grape composition is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a touch of Petit Verdot.
A racy style, always in tension
The wines of Calon Ségur combine density and refinement, with noble tannins and a vibrant energy. Their aromatic expression evolves beautifully over time, moving from blackberry and black cherry to nuances of cedar, truffle, and tobacco. These are emotional wines, powerful but never demonstrative.
Iconic cuvées
Château Calon Ségur: the grand cuvée, austere in its youth, but prodigious with age.
Marquis de Calon Ségur: charming second wine, accessible earlier, but with the same precision.
Saint-Estèphe de Calon: an elegant entry point to the estate's universe.
A philosophy of elegance and precision
Since its acquisition in 2012 by the Suravenir family, the château has invested in highly precise viticulture, conversion to organic farming, new technical facilities, and rigorous parcel selections. Every detail is designed to enhance the terroir without artificiality.
