Founded in 1998 by Paul Hobbs, a world-renowned American winemaker (formerly of Opus One, Mondavi), Viña Cobos quickly became an icon of high-end Argentine wine. Located in Luján de Cuyo, in the Mendoza region, the winery reveals the most beautiful high-altitude terroirs of the region, through an approach that is both technical and instinctive.

Origins and Philosophy

Paul Hobbs, fascinated by the potential of Argentine Malbec since the 1980s, created Viña Cobos with the ambition of making it a world-class grape variety, on par with Californian Cabernet or Burgundy Pinot Noir. He relies on parcel-based winemaking, low yields, and precise aging to express depth without heaviness.

Vineyards and Terroirs

Viña Cobos works with several terroirs located between 950 and 1,200 meters above sea level, mainly in Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley (notably in Los Árboles, Altamira, and Gualtallary). The soils are stony, calcareous, or sandy, the nights are cool, and the sunlight is ideal for producing structured, intense, and elegant wines. The vines are managed using sustainable or organic farming practices.

Winemaking and Aging

Each parcel is vinified separately. Fermentations are slow, with prolonged macerations and gentle extractions. The wines are then aged for 18 to 24 months in French oak barrels (up to 70% new for the top cuvées), then bottled without filtration.

Iconic Cuvées

  • Cobos Malbec: iconic cuvée, purity, concentration, exceptional silkiness.

  • Bramare Luján de Cuyo: density and structure, dark fruits, long aging.

  • Bramare Valle de Uco: more mineral, vertical, marked salinity.

  • Cocodrilo Corte: complex red blend, immediate charm.

  • Felino: fruity entry-level, modern and gourmet.

Style and Recognition

The wines of Viña Cobos are recognized for their balance between power and finesse, their precision in aging, and their mineral depth. Cobos Malbec is among the few South American wines rated 98–100/100 by the international press. An absolute reference for Argentine Malbec, both luxurious and expressive.
