Nestled in the steep slopes of Gratallops, Costers del Siurana is one of the most emblematic estates of the Catalan Priorat. Combining Mediterranean power with the mineral breath of the local slate (llicorella), this estate has been cultivating a racy, complex, and elegant style for over 40 years, against the caricatured standards of the region.
A Pioneering History
Founded in 1979 by Carles Pastrana and his wife Mariona Jarque, Costers del Siurana is part of the historic estates that contributed to the renaissance of Priorat alongside Alvaro Palacios or René Barbier. Visionary, the couple managed to revive a then-forgotten terraced vineyard by combining native grape varieties and Bordeaux inspiration.
Today, their son Marc Pastrana continues this quest for excellence, in a philosophy of precision and elegance, faithful to the soul of the terroir.
A Terroir of Extreme Character
The vines cling to the dizzying slopes of Gratallops, on llicorella soils, this black slate typical of Priorat, which gives the wines their mineral tension and unique verticality. The hot and dry climate, counterbalanced by high altitudes and cool nights, allows for a slow maturation, a source of concentration and balance.
Precise and Respectful Vinification
The harvests are manual and selective, carried out plot by plot according to optimal maturity. Fermentations take place in stainless steel or concrete tanks, with indigenous yeasts, then the wines are aged for a long time in French oak barrels, in a measured approach, without seeking excessive extraction or marked wood.
A Distinctive Style: Intensity, Structure, Purity
The wines of Costers del Siurana are rich, but never heavy. They offer chiseled tannins, great aromatic depth (black cherry, wild herbs, hot stone), and a striking mineral freshness, which marks the identity of the great wines of Priorat.
Emblematic Cuvées
Clos de l’Obac: noble blend of Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, and Carignan. Complexity, masterful balance, assured aging.
Dauphin: second wine more accessible, on ripe fruit and suppleness, without losing the imprint of the terroir.
Dolç de l’Obac: natural sweet wine of rare elegance, with notes of fig, cocoa, and sweet spices.
A Philosophy of Harmony and Truth
Costers del Siurana refuses excess. Here, the terroir speaks louder than trends. The estate works with humility to produce deep, sincere wines that tell the story of the mineral beauty and light of Priorat, vintage after vintage.
