Born in 1979 from the visionary passion of the brothers Riccardo and Renzo Cotarella, the Falesco estate has transformed the perception of the terroirs of Lazio and Umbria, two regions long overshadowed by Tuscany. Thanks to a demanding approach combining oenological expertise, innovation, and the enhancement of native grape varieties, Falesco has established iconic cuvées throughout Italy.

Key figures: a renowned family of oenologists

  • Riccardo Cotarella, a world-renowned oenologist, is president of the International Union of Oenologists and a consultant for prestigious estates throughout Italy and internationally.

  • Renzo Cotarella, his brother, worked for many years as CEO of Marchesi Antinori.

  • The new generation, Dominga, Enrico, and Riccardo (son), continues to shine the family legacy with a modernized approach, without compromising on quality.

A heritage of terroirs between Lazio and Umbria

The estate owns more than 370 hectares of vineyards, spread over:

  • Montefiascone (Lazio): volcanic soils, excellent for whites like Roscetto, an ancestral grape variety brought back to prominence in Ferentano.

  • Bolsena: proximity to the lake on basaltic soils, promoting freshness.

  • Orvieto and its hills (Umbria): historical plots of reds, perfect for the complex expressions of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sangiovese.

Remarkable plots

  • Montiano Hill: clay-limestone terroir facing southwest, reserved for premium Merlot.

  • Ferentano cru: historical plot of Roscetto, harvested late to maximize concentration.

  • Tellus terroir (San Lorenzo): cooler area dedicated to the accessible and vibrant expression of young grape varieties.

Wine style

Falesco wines are distinguished by a clear fruity intensity, an elegant aging, and a natural balance. Their style combines accessibility and structure, ideal for enthusiasts seeking sincere, modern wines rooted in their terroir.

Iconic cuvées

  • Montiano: 100% Merlot, aged 12 months in new barrels – the estate's great cuvée, supple, deep, and velvety.

  • Ferentano: rare white from the Roscetto grape, complex, structured, notes of almond and white flowers.

  • Tellus Syrah: aromatic purity, black fruits, white pepper – highly appreciated by sommeliers.

  • Tellus Bianco & Rosso: fresh, fruity, perfect for convivial tasting.

  • Vitiano: the estate's DNA in an immediate and affordable version, without sacrificing quality.

Philosophy & winemaking

Falesco is based on a scientific and sensitive approach:

  • Parcel vinification according to exposure, altitude, and soil type.

  • Controlled yields, manual harvesting, and rigorous grape selection.

  • Thermo-regulated fermentations, gravity vinification to respect the material.

  • Aging in French barrels of 225 to 300 liters, often on fine lees, depending on the cuvées.

The Cotarella family's vision: to make Central Italy a land of international wine excellence, relying on forgotten grape varieties, a unique heritage, and a constant desire to progress without ever betraying the identity of the places.
