Located in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet since 1859, the Domaine Jean Chartron is one of the essential names of the Côte de Beaune for lovers of Chardonnays with a mineral, chiseled, and slender expression. Five generations have succeeded each other at the head of the estate, with Jean-Michel Chartron, a man of the field and a rigorous technician, at the helm since the 1990s.
The estate operates about 14 hectares, almost exclusively in white, on prestigious plots of Puligny-Montrachet, including several historic 1ers crus and grands crus, such as Chevalier-Montrachet, Clos du Cailleret (monopoly), and Les Folatières. Part of the vineyards is also located in Saint-Aubin and Chassagne-Montrachet, bringing diversity and complementarity to the blending cuvées.
The viticulture is conducted with great care, in a very advanced reasoned logic, limiting treatments and favoring precise manual work. The harvest is entirely manual, with rigorous sorting. The grapes are gently pressed and the juices are settled without excess, to preserve the purity of the fruit and the mineral expression.
The fermentations take place in oak barrels, with a moderate amount of new wood (about 20 to 30% depending on the cuvées). The aging generally lasts 12 to 18 months, with very little stirring to preserve the natural energy of the wines. The Chartron style is distinguished by its straightness, aromatic purity, and great readability of the terroir: the wines are often tense, saline, with a precise and elegant finish.
Jean-Michel Chartron ensures to maintain the identity unique to each climate, without technical overload or excessive opulence. These are wines of balance and aging potential, crafted to evolve with finesse.
