Domaine Jean Trapet Père & Fils – The Living Breath of Gevrey

The Domaine Jean Trapet Père & Fils, located in Gevrey-Chambertin, is a singular and respected voice in Burgundy. Heir to a lineage of winemakers rooted in the village since the 19th century, Jean-Louis Trapet took over the family estate in the 1990s with a clear idea: to reconcile the demands of the great Burgundy terroirs with a deeply living approach to the vineyard.

For more than two decades, the estate has been entirely cultivated biodynamically, with particular attention paid to natural rhythms, plant infusions, horse plowing, and the vitality of the soils. A pioneering approach, applied with rigor but without dogmatism, which gives birth to vibrant, nuanced, and luminous Pinot Noirs, from some of the most beautiful climates of Gevrey-Chambertin, notably Chambertin, Latricières, Chapelle, and Petite Chapelle.

The estate covers about 15 hectares, with a majority in village and premier cru appellations, but also some iconic grand crus. The work in the vineyard is manual, respectful, and precise, with moderate yields to ensure concentration without ever sacrificing finesse.

In the cellar, Jean-Louis and now his son Pierre Trapet, who has been actively accompanying him for several vintages, apply a gentle and respectful vinification of the fruit. The grapes are harvested by hand, partially or totally destemmed depending on the year, and the fermentations are natural, without yeast addition. Extractions are controlled, with long infusions rather than violent macerations, in a concern for total respect for Pinot Noir.

The aging is done in French oak barrels, with new wood used sparingly (often 20 to 35%), to never overpower the wine. These are subtle aging processes, often prolonged (up to 18 months), followed by bottling without fining or filtration.

The Trapet style is a form of noble simplicity: the wines do not seek demonstration, but accuracy. Their strength lies in the balance, depth, and energy they exude, vintage after vintage. An inner tension, almost mineral, runs through the cuvées, supported by fine tannins, precise aromatics, often floral and spicy, and a remarkable aging potential.

Note: the Trapet family also produces wine in Alsace, on a small family estate in Riquewihr, where biodynamics is also at the heart of the project.

  • Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru – velvety, peppery, more charming in its youth.
