Located in the heart of the Château-Chalon appellation, the Domaine Jean Macle is today one of the undisputed references for the great oxidative wines of Jura. Founded at the beginning of the 20th century, the estate has established itself as a symbol of authenticity and patience, notably under the leadership of Jean Macle, and later his son Laurent Macle, who continues the house style today with the same rigor.
The vineyard, a little over 10 hectares, is predominantly planted with Savagnin, the emblematic grape variety of yellow wines, but also with Chardonnay, used for more accessible or topped-up cuvées. The vines are located on typical marl-limestone of the Jura Revermont, on hillside slopes, with a beautiful exposure that promotes the slow and even ripening of the grapes.
The viticulture remains traditional and manual, with low yields and particular attention paid to the quality of the grapes at harvest. The style of the estate is characterized by a long, patient, and uncompromising aging, especially for the famous Vin Jaune, aged under a veil for more than 6 years without topping up, in old untopped barrels. This allows the development of the famous yeast veil, which protects the wine while giving it its unique notes of walnut, curry, spices, and warm stone.
For the topped-up Chardonnay or blended cuvées, the aging is shorter and without a veil, offering more direct wines but always endowed with a mineral tension and a salivating depth.
The wines of the estate are concentrated, dry, powerful but never heavy, with great aromatic persistence and exceptional aging potential: some yellow wines can evolve over 50 years and more, developing fascinating nuances.
