Famiglia Klausener — Ticino’s Hidden Merlot Gem

Nestled in Purasca, in Switzerland’s Malcantone region, Famiglia Klausener has quietly earned a reputation for producing some of Ticino’s finest Merlots. Founded in 1982, the family-run micro-estate — led by Eric, Fabienne, and their son Sylvain — produces a very limited number of bottles each year, driven by precision, passion, and respect for terroir.

Philosophy and Production

With only a few hectares under vine, production remains intentionally small-scale. The estate works with old Merlot vines, often over 50 years old, grown on hillside parcels at varying altitudes.

Winemaking is minimalist and natural: long macerations, native yeasts, gentle handling, and aging in carefully selected oak barrels. There is no manipulation — just an honest expression of grape, soil, and vintage.

Wine Style

Klausener wines are defined by their structured elegance, aromatic depth, and aging potential. Notes of black cherry, wild berries, dark chocolate, truffle, and fine tobacco are common, all wrapped in a velvety mouthfeel supported by firm yet polished tannins.

They stand at the crossroads between classic Bordeaux influence and a unique Alpine-Mediterranean character.

Signature Wines

  • Gran Risavier – 100% old-vine Merlot from the best vintages. Deep, structured, built for the long haul.

  • Rosso di Sera – A ripe, supple, oak-aged Merlot with spice and generosity.

  • Baronessa Rossa – A bold blend of rare grapes, with southern charm and depth.

  • Tramonto Rosso, Belcantonissimo, Bianco di Sera, Chiaretto – Limited cuvées showcasing finesse, creativity, and terroir precision.

A Discreet Treasure

Famiglia Klausener is one of Ticino’s quietest yet most respected wine producers — crafting soulful, rare wines with integrity. For collectors and purists seeking authentic Merlot with a sense of place, this is a name to know.
