Domaine de Montcalmès – Purity & Intensity in Terrasses du Larzac

The Languedoc Revelation with a Strong Identity

Created in 1999 by Frédéric Pourtalié, formerly of Grange des Pères and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine de Montcalmès has established itself as one of the greatest names in Languedoc. It takes its name from a hamlet located in the commune of Puéchabon, at the heart of the Terrasses du Larzac. The estate is now a cult reference, with confidential distribution and impressive consistency.

Limestone Terroir & Cool Climate

The vines, at an altitude (200–300 m), rest on garrigue and cracked limestone soils, near the Hérault. The cool nights allow the grapes to reach full phenolic maturity without losing acidity, a key factor in the Montcalmès style. The grape varieties are dominated by Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre, with a bit of Viognier.

A Burgundian & Patient Approach

Parcel-based vinifications, long aging of 24 months in Burgundy barrels (1–2 wines), no filtration, little sulfur. The estate prioritizes precision, balance, and patience: the wines are never released before reaching a fully developed expression.

Style: Southern Depth, Northern Freshness

The estate's reds are distinguished by a mentholated freshness, a framework of fine but structuring tannins, and pure black fruit. Young vintages often start reserved but gain elegance, minerality, and complexity with age. The rare white is ample, saline, driven by Viognier, without excessive varietal character.

Key Cuvées

  • Terrasses du Larzac Red: blend of Syrah (60–70%), Grenache, and Mourvèdre, aged 2 years, structured and velvety wine, very long aging potential.

  • IGP Pays d’Hérault White: Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne – balance between southern density and saline freshness.

  • Old Micro-Cuvées: some single-varietal cuvées (Syrah, Mourvèdre) were produced in the 2000s–2010s, now unobtainable.
