Frédéric Esmonin — Quiet Excellence in the Côte de Nuits

History & Terroir
The Frédéric Esmonin estate, based in Gevrey‑Chambertin, was founded in the 1970s by André Esmonin. Frédéric joined the family business in 1988—the year the domaine began bottling and marketing its wines under its own name. The family is deeply rooted in Burgundian winegrowing and connected to other well-known producers.

Vineyard & Grape Varieties
The estate spans approximately 6 to 10 hectares in the Gevrey‑Chambertin appellation, including Grand Cru parcels (Mazis‑Chambertin, Ruchottes‑Chambertin, Chambertin Clos‑de‑Bèze, Bonnes‑Mares) and Premier Cru plots (Estournelles‑Saint‑Jacques, Lavaut‑Saint‑Jacques, Champonnet). Pinot Noir is the signature grape, cultivated on varied soils—deep or light, clay-limestone, with optimal exposure—yielding elegance and structure.

Winemaking Philosophy
The estate practices “lutte raisonnée” viticulture—no herbicides, natural compost. Grapes are hand-harvested and begin fermentation after a cold soak. Wines are aged for 14 to 17 months in French oak barrels, with up to 80 % new oak for crus, balanced by older barrels for village-level wines. No filtration is done, and fining takes place just prior to bottling.

Wine Style
Frédéric Esmonin’s wines are defined by their depth, concentration, and harmony between power and elegance. Grand Crus are expressive and well-measured, Premier Crus stand for aromatic purity and finesse, while village wines highlight freshness and precision.

Signature Wines

  • Mazis‑Chambertin Grand Cru — structured, intense aromatics, silky tannins.

  • Ruchottes‑Chambertin Grand Cru — lighter terroir, finesse, and minerality.

  • Estournelles‑Saint‑Jacques Premier Cru — concentrated, balanced, with sun-kissed elegance.

  • Lavaut‑Saint‑Jacques Premier Cru — dense, powerful expression from prime exposition.

  • Clos‑de‑Bèze, Chambertin, Bonnes‑Mares — négociant bottlings reflecting the domaine’s signature in top sites.

  • Gevrey‑Chambertin “Clos Prieur”, Vieilles Vignes, Hautes Côtes de Nuits, Pernand‑Vergelesses — village-level wines offering refinement, freshness, and affordability.
