Domaine des Roches Neuves – The purity of the Loire by Thierry Germain

A visionary winemaker in the heart of Saumur

Arriving in Saumur in 1991 from Bordeaux, Thierry Germain quickly made his mark on the Loire with his high standards and sensitivity. At the head of the Domaine des Roches Neuves since 1993, he converted all 23 hectares to organic and then biodynamic agriculture (Demeter certification).

Living terroirs & precision viticulture

The vines, spread over the Saumur and Saumur-Champigny appellations, rest on tuffeau soils, a soft limestone typical of the region. Germain's approach is based on listening to the plant, an absolute respect for living things, and ultra-meticulous parcel work. Yields are controlled to allow the terroir to express itself with intensity.

Subtle aging & refined vinifications

The vinifications are minimally interventionist, often in wooden vats or amphorae. Extractions are gentle, aging is precise, without embellishment. The goal is to preserve the freshness, minerality, and energy of the wine, with pure fruit and a sleek texture.

A unique style: energy, verticality & depth

The wines, both red and white, shine with their brilliance, mineral tension, and structural finesse. Far from the massive expressions of Cabernet Franc, Germain offers a floral and airy interpretation, full of inner intensity. The Chenins reveal a crystalline and mouthwatering straightness.

Iconic cuvées

  • Saumur-Champigny “La Marginale”: selection of old vines, depth, energy, and aging potential.

  • Saumur-Champigny “Les Mémoires”: century-old vines, chiseled texture, immense finesse.

  • Saumur “L’Insolite” (white): pure and taut Chenin, striking minerality.

  • Bulles de Roches (sparkling): traditional natural method, liveliness, and fruit.
