Founded by John Alban in 1989 in Edna Valley, Central California, Alban Vineyards is recognized as the pioneer of Rhone varietals in California, and one of the most respected winemakers in the United States. Visionary, John Alban was the first to plant Syrah, Viognier, and Roussanne on a large scale in a cool climate, thus creating a true turning point in the history of Californian wine.

A unique terroir by the Pacific

The estate is located a few kilometers from the Pacific Ocean, on limestone, schist, and volcanic soils, which give the wines tension, density, and freshness. The climate, marked by strong day/night contrasts, allows for slow ripening and perfect balances.

Wine style

The wines of Alban Vineyards are powerful, complex, full-bodied yet always balanced, with silky textures and aromatic expressions of rare intensity. The reds, notably the Syrah, are deep, opulent, with notes of violet, black olive, ink, dark chocolate, and spices. The whites (Viognier, Roussanne) are ample, expressive, and endowed with remarkable structure.

Iconic cuvées

  • Reva Syrah: iconic cuvée, concentrated, velvety, with a long aging potential.

  • Seymour’s Vineyard: the pinnacle of the Alban style, dense and sculptural.

  • Patrina Syrah: a more accessible yet already remarkable expression of the house's expertise.

  • Viognier Estate: American reference of the varietal, rich, floral, mineral.

  • Roussanne: rare wine, powerful, capable of aging beautifully.

Philosophy and winemaking

John Alban works in an artisanal and ultra-precise manner, with a deep commitment to the expression of the vintage and place. Yields are low, fermentations are long, extractions are controlled. Aging takes place in French barrels, often new, with particular care given to the integration of the wood. No compromise is made: each wine is a masterpiece, produced in limited quantities, intended for those who seek the sublime.
