Located in Malterdingen, in Baden-Württemberg, the Bernhard Huber estate has established itself as an absolute benchmark for German Pinot Noir. Inspired by Burgundy but rooted in its terroir, the estate produces wines that are both refined, deep, and precise, in a decidedly dry, tense, and mineral style.

History and Philosophy

Bernhard Huber, who passed away in 2014, was a pioneer in the international recognition of Spätburgunder (the German name for Pinot Noir). His son Julian Huber continues the family tradition today, adding even more rigor and elegance. The style is based on demanding viticulture, low yields, and delicate work in the cellar.

Vineyard and Terroirs

The estate covers about 30 hectares, mostly planted with Pinot Noir, on Jurassic limestone soils comparable to those of the Côte de Nuits. The most renowned plots include:

  • Bienenberg: structure, power, salinity.

  • Sommerhalde: finesse, fruit, length.

  • Wildenstein GG: prestige cuvée, exceptional longevity.
Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Gris are also cultivated with the same precision.

Winemaking Methods

The grapes are partially or fully destemmed depending on the vintage, then fermented with indigenous yeasts. Aging is done in French oak barrels, with a variable proportion of new wood (up to 70% for the grands crus). Extraction is gentle, and the wines are neither filtered nor fined.

Iconic Cuvées

  • Spätburgunder GG Wildenstein: intense, vertical, great wine for aging.

  • Bienenberg GG: ample and structured, with pronounced minerality.

  • Sommerhalde GG: immediate charm and elegance.

  • Malterdinger Pinot Noir: very serious entry-level wine.

  • Chardonnay GG: tense and Burgundian in spirit.

Style and Recognition

The Huber style is defined by its purity, limestone tension, and remarkable aging potential. The wines compete with the best Burgundies while maintaining their distinct German identity. Today, Huber is considered one of the greatest producers of Pinot Noir outside of France.
