A South African Family Tale

Founded in 1991 by Emil and Sonette den Dulk on the hills of Polkadraai in Stellenbosch, De Toren quickly became one of the most respected vineyards in South Africa. Since the original purchase, the ambition has always been clear: to produce exceptional Bordeaux-style red wines.

Ancient Terroir and Precision Micro-Vineyards

Spread over 25 ha at 300–350 m altitude, the vineyard rests on very ancient granite soils, often millennia old. A unique detail: more than a dozen soil types have been identified, with each grape variety and clone carefully matched to the most suitable plot.

Style: Structured Concentration and Saline Elegance

De Toren wines combine depth and refinement: dense body, fine tannins, fresh acidity, with aromas of blackcurrant, licorice, and spices. The purity of the fruit is preserved thanks to gravity-fed winemaking and limited aging in new barrels.

Iconic Cuvées

  • Fusion V: a classic blend of Bordeaux varieties – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot – the result of rigorous plot selection.

  • Edition Z: centered on Merlot, with elegance and immediate charm.

  • Book XVII, Patronus, The Black Lion: prestige cuvées, structured for aging and with subtle luxury.

Philosophy: Sustainable Innovation & Expertise

De Toren is one of the first South African estates to adopt a gravity-fed cellar and organic practices, with certified organic production starting in 2020. Manual harvesting, meticulous sorting, gentle pressing, and viticultural orientations according to wind and soil embody a sustainable and avant-garde approach.
