Founded in 2003 by Javier Rodríguez, a passionate oenologist and rising figure in the Spanish wine scene, Rodríguez y Sanzo is an atypical winery. Without a single anchor, it embraces a cross-sectional approach, working on wines in several major regions of Spain: Ribera del Duero, Rueda, Toro, Rioja, Bierzo, Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla y León…
Javier Rodríguez's goal is clear: to break free from the constraints of appellations to explore the full potential of Spanish terroirs, while maintaining a demand for precision, purity, and drinkability.
Philosophy & winemaking
Rodríguez y Sanzo stands out for its modern and flexible vision, focused on grape quality, sustainable practices, and a very precise work of blending and aging. The winemaking is adjusted to each terroir and each grape variety, in a logic of micro-cuvées.
The aging varies according to the cuvées: new wood, large barrels, multiple-pass barrels, amphorae, or concrete tanks. The wines are never masked: the style is clean, pure, accessible yet ambitious.
Iconic cuvées
La Viña de Amalio (Ribera del Duero): Tinta Fina from old vines, very concentrated and elegant.
Borrasca (Rueda): Verdejo from old vines, aged in barrel and amphora, ample and mineral.
Castrovaldés (Albariño – Rías Baixas): iodized freshness and vibrant tension.
Burro Loco: iconoclastic cuvée from Toro, intense and racy.
Cenizas (Rioja): a modern Rioja, precise and unadorned.
Wine style
The wines of Rodríguez y Sanzo are clean, expressive, and well-constructed. Whether white or red, they avoid excesses of wood or ripeness. The style is supple, straight, always balanced between fruit, tension, and finesse, making them cuvées that are both pleasant when young and worthy of aging.
