A Legend Born from an Influential Sibling
Founded in 1986 by Michael Etzel and his brother-in-law, the critic Robert Parker Jr., the estate is situated on an 88-acre farm in Willamette Valley, in the AVA Ribbon Ridge. Today, Michael remains at its helm, supported by his son Mikey Etzel, while the French group Henriot holds a majority stake while respecting the autonomy of the Etzel family .
Terroir & Biodynamic Practices
The main 30-acre vineyard is located on south/southwest-facing hills, in Willakenzie soils, densely planted (~2200 vines/acre). Since 2007, viticulture has been conducted in bio-biodynamics (tonics, compost, grazing), with natural farming, without herbicides or certification .
Winemaking: Simplicity and Purity
Hand harvesting, fermentation with indigenous yeasts, aging in French barrels (10–35% new wood depending on the vintage), in a cold cellar for 10–12 months. The wine is only racked at bottling, without fining or filtration, and stored on lees, to preserve aromatic purity ().
Style: Saline Tension, Expressive Finesse
The "The Vineyard" Pinots are renowned for their silky texture, intense red fruit, saline minerality, and vibrant freshness. Rated between 97 and 100 by critics, they combine depth and Burgundian lineage .
