A historic estate at the dawn of a new Mouton era
Château d’Armailhac, formerly known as Château Mouton Baronne Philippe, is one of the four Grands Crus Classés of Pauillac. Owned by the Rothschilds since the 19th century, it is currently undergoing a qualitative overhaul under the impetus of the Mouton group, with recent investments in the vineyard and facilities, and the modern vision of Baroness Philippine de Rothschild.
Terroir & grape varieties: the quintessence of Pauillac's gravel
The vineyard covers approximately 55 hectares of deep gravel with a limestone subsoil, characteristic traits of the Pauillac appellation. High density (about 8,500 vines/ha), average vine age of 25–30 years. Typical blend: 65–70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25–30% Merlot, with 3% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Each plot is vinified separately to preserve the expression of the terroir.
Viticulture & philosophy: refined tradition and regeneration
Sustainable viticulture with grass cover between rows, integrated pest management, manual harvesting, and multiple passes. Recent work aims to strengthen water balance and biodiversity, with the goal of accurately reflecting the identity of the cru.
Vinification & aging: elegant modernity under Rothschild influence
Gravity vinification in stainless steel or wooden vats, with selective pump-overs and long macerations of 3–4 weeks. Aging for 15 to 18 months in French barrels (60 to 70% new), respecting an elegant Pauillac signature: structure, finesse, and longevity.
Iconic cuvées
Château d’Armailhac: the main cuvée, combining power and freshness, aromas of blackcurrant, graphite, cedar, and sweet spices. Fine tannins, elegant body, and saline finish.
Pauillac de d’Armailhac: second wine, supple, fruity, and accessible, perfect for more immediate consumption.
Château d’Armailhac Blanc: rare white wine made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon (30–40 ha), fresh, mineral, with citrus and stone notes.
