A Medieval Heritage and a Bold Renaissance
Château Citran is one of the oldest estates on the left bank, founded in the 12th century and transformed into a fortified castle as early as the 13th century. Owned by the Donissan-de-Citran family for several centuries, it has experienced a revival since being taken over by the Miailhe family in 1945, and then its integration into the Taillan Group led by Jacques Merlaut from 1997. Today, under the expert management of the Taillan Group teams, the estate combines respect for history with modern oenological practices.

A Generous Terroir and a Complete Médoc Palette
The vineyard of the château extends over approximately 90 hectares, divided into two sectors — around the château itself and in Avensan. The soils, composed of a mix of gravel, sand, clay, and limestone, give the wines freshness, structure, and balance. The vines, planted at a high density (more than 6,000 vines/ha), are on average 25 years old, ensuring concentration and aromatic complexity.

Grape Varieties

  • Cabernet Sauvignon (~58%)

  • Merlot (~40%) with small plantings of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot harvested depending on the vintages

Responsible Cultivation, a Sustainable Vision
Château Citran is progressively committed to environmentally friendly viticulture, with some plots under organic farming. The aim is to preserve biodiversity, soil quality, and the typicity of the grapes.

Vinification & Aging
The harvest is entirely manual, followed by precise sorting. Thermoregulated fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, then the wines undergo malolactic fermentation in tanks and barrels depending on the cuvées. Aging extends from 12 to 14 months in French barrels, about a third of which are new wood, to support the structure without masking the fruity purity.

Style & Iconic Cuvées

  • Château Citran: the main cuvée, with a nose of stewed black fruits, sweet spices, and cedar. On the palate, it combines power, freshness, and tight tannins, with a long finish that reveals a beautiful salinity.

  • Château Citran Tradition: a more accessible second wine, with notes of fresh red fruits, with a light but refined Médoc typicity.
