Domaine du Colombier – Characterful Syrah on the Lands of Hermitage

A Family Story in the Heart of the Rhône Valley
The Domaine du Colombier, located in Mercurol in the Drôme, is a family-owned estate now managed by Florent and David Viale. For several generations, the family has passionately cultivated the prestigious terroirs of Crozes-Hermitage and Hermitage, in the northern Rhône Valley.

Iconic Syrah Terroirs
The vineyard spans 17 hectares, mostly in the AOC Crozes-Hermitage, with a precious plot on the mythical Hermitage hillside. The soils vary between rolled pebbles, red clays, loess, and granites, giving each cuvée a distinct personality.

Rigorous Vineyard Work and Manual Harvesting
The estate adopts careful viticulture, close to organic without certification. The soils are worked, treatments are minimized, and harvesting is done by hand, with meticulous sorting.

Parcel-Based Vinifications and Precise Aging
Each parcel is vinified separately in concrete or stainless steel vats, with gentle extractions to preserve the fruit and the finesse of the tannins. Aging is done in barrels or demi-muids, often for 12 to 18 months, depending on the cuvée.

Style: Rhône Structure, Finesse, and Aging Potential
The wines of Colombier express all the nobility of Syrah: black fruits, spices, violet, black olive, and a mineral framework unique to the northern Rhône. The Crozes are charming from their youth, while the Hermitage gains depth and complexity over time.

Iconic Cuvées:

  • Crozes-Hermitage “Cuvée Gaby”: structure, black fruits, careful aging

  • Classic Crozes-Hermitage: accessible, fruity, typical northern Rhône

  • Red Hermitage: powerful, complex, great for aging

  • White Crozes-Hermitage: Marsanne/Roussanne, floral and creamy
