Founded in 1987 by José María Ruiz, a passionate sommelier and restaurateur (founder of the famous José María restaurant in Segovia), Pago de Carraovejas quickly established itself as one of the most iconic estates in Ribera del Duero. The project is now led by his son Pedro Ruiz Aragoneses, who has managed to combine heritage and innovation, with a committed vision for sustainable, biodynamic, and certified viticulture.
The estate's philosophy is based on the pursuit of pure expression of the Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) grape, enhanced by demanding agricultural practices and precise winemaking. Pago de Carraovejas champions a unique identity, beyond classic standards, by cultivating altitude, elegance, and tension in its wines.
The estate spans over 160 hectares of owned vineyards, planted on the limestone slopes of Peñafiel, between 750 and 900 meters of altitude. This exceptional terroir, with complex soils (limestone, clay, gravel), produces concentrated grapes, with a natural freshness preserved by the altitude.
The winemaking is gravity-driven in a spectacular and ultra-modern winery, designed to minimize any mechanical intervention. Fermentations use indigenous yeasts, and the aging is conducted in French and American barrels, with great attention to balance.
Pago de Carraovejas Crianza: Tempranillo (with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot), signature wine, velvety, complex, both modern and classic.
El Anejón: single-plot cuvée from a single terraced hill, dense, mineral, great aging potential.
Cuesta de las Liebres: 100% Tempranillo cuvée, from the oldest vines, collector's wine, both massive and chiseled.
Ossian (project in Rueda): masterful expression of old vine Verdejo, aged white wine under wood.
