Iconic estate of the Southwest, Château Montus spans approximately 45 ha in the Madiran appellation, on slopes covered with large Pyrenean pebbles. Taken over in 1980 by Alain Brumont, it is now passionately managed, accompanied by his team, and resembles the “cathedral of Tannat.” Montus symbolizes a qualitative revolution in the region, placing Madiran among the great terroirs of France.
A powerful terroir
Vineyard planted on sloping clay-limestone soils, scattered with rolled pebbles of Pyrenean origin, facing south and southwest, at the ideal altitude for Tannat.
Approximately 80% Tannat, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon (and sometimes a bit of Cabernet Franc), the perfect blend for structure and elegance.
Meticulous viticulture
Precise cultivation: thoughtful orientation of rows, careful pruning and debudding, natural soil management (two-thirds of the vine in spontaneous meadow), manual harvesting, strict sorting in the vineyard and winery.
The work is carried out with deep respect for the terroirs, biodiversity, and water, with meticulous care given to each vine.
Vinification & aging
Slow fermentation, without pumping, only by mechanical punching down, exclusively on free-run juice, to preserve tannic finesse.
Long macerations (3 to 6 weeks), followed by aging for 12 to 16 months in barrels (60 to 80% new wood for the grand vin, with some cuvées aged 36 months).
Style & emblematic cuvées
Château Montus (grand vin): powerful, structured, expressive wine, with ripe black fruits, spices, licorice, graphite, with robust yet refined tannins, and intense depth. Great aging potential (20–40 years).
Montus Prestige: 100% Tannat aged entirely in new wood, considered the “Pétrus of the Southwest.”
La Tyre: from an exceptional terroir of pebbles, supple, fresh, and deep, aged in foudre or barrels.
Petit Torus: more accessible style, without compromising Montus identity.
