Established tradition, silky texture, and authentic elegance
Historic cru of the Fronsac appellation, Château Vieux Taillefer spreads its 12 hectares of vineyards over a clay-limestone and gravelly terroir offering a beautiful balance between richness and freshness. The estate embodies viticulture that respects the terroir, with an elegant style, silky tannins, and refined fruity expression.
Terroir & grape varieties
Clay-limestone soils mixed with gravel on sunny slopes. The grape composition favors Merlot (≈70%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (≈25%) and a hint of Cabernet Sauvignon, allowing for tension, structure, and classic aromatic complexity.
Viticulture & winemaking
Respectful viticulture (sustainable agriculture), manual harvesting, rigorous sorting. Fermentations take place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by aging for 12 to 14 months in barrels with about 30% new wood, highlighting the finesse of the fruit and ensuring a harmonious tannic structure.
Style & aging
The wine is distinguished by aromas of blackberry, black cherry, sweet pepper, and cedar, with a full, velvety, and slightly spicy palate. It can be enjoyed from 5 years but can evolve delicately up to 15 years depending on the vintages.
Iconic cuvées
Château Vieux Taillefer – A grand, racy wine, structured, with pure and slender fruit.
Savio de Vieux Taillefer – A more accessible second wine, indulgent and fresh, true to the estate's style.
