Château Certan de May-de-Certan, more often called Certan de May, is a discreet estate located on the prestigious Pomerol plateau, just a few meters from Vieux Château Certan and Petrus. It takes its name from the de May family, French nobility of Scottish origin, who owned these lands since the Middle Ages. Since 1925, the Barraud family has owned and managed it, with Jean-Luc Barreau, the founder's grandson, currently at the helm of the estate.
The vineyard covers about 5 hectares on the typical clay-gravel soils of the Pomerol plateau. This privileged terroir gives rise to wines that are rich, deep, and elegant. The grape variety is dominated by Merlot (70%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (25%) and a bit of Cabernet Sauvignon (5%), for a balance between opulence and freshness.
The winemaking is carried out with rigor, in a very traditional and discreet spirit. The grapes are destemmed, fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, then aged for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, with 50 to 60% new wood. The estate remains deliberately low-profile, preferring to let the wine speak for itself.
Château Certan de May: the estate's unique wine, with a deep color, bouquet of truffle, black cherry, graphite, and an enveloping, structured, and persistent palate. A classic and refined Pomerol for aging, often underestimated.
